The Hackney Mosaic Project was commissioned by Sainsbury's for their Local store in Hoxton on the corner of Old Street and Pitfield Street.

The design chosen celebrates Hoxton's history as a centre of entertainment and nightlife. It focuses on the Hoxton Varieties, one of the many local Music Halls, that used to stand at 18 - 20 Pitfield Street.

The mosaic took 3 months to make and the names of all the makers are recorded in the panel below the lettering.

It was fixed in November 2013 by master mosaic fixer Walter Bernardin (pictured below).
